Herman Munster (Fred Gwynne) has only recently bought himself a ham
radio, and is now spending hours on end on it - much to the dismay of his
family, especially his wife Lily (Yvonne De Carlo), who misses her
husband's attention. Also, everybody thinks Herman's a bit of a fool, and
they let him know ... and then Herman receives a transmission from Mars -
and naturally gets overly excited and already sees himself as a Nobel
Prize laureate. And when he tells Grandpa (Al Lewis) about this, Grandpa
gets quite excited himself, so the two of them set out to find the UFO
that the Martians told Herman has for the first time landed on earth. But
of course, there are no Martians, it's just two kids (Ronnie Dapo, Pat
Rosson) with walkie talkies playing spaceship. But Herman and Grandpa
manage to track them down ... and scare them off. But they take a photo of
their (toy) UFO to convince the authorities - authorities that are quick
to spot a "Made in Japan" sticker on the UFO. Something Herman
doesn't know, so when he radios with the "Martians" again and
gets the boys' dad (Dort Clark) on the line, who threatens the destruction
of earth, he gets genuinely scared ... In terms of writing,
this episode is at best so-so - but all the leads are in fine form again
and really elevate the material given. Best scene in this one is Fred
Gwynne, Yvonne De Carlo, Al Lewis and Pat Priest all crammed into a way
too small bunker, with Herman trying to open an envelope - which doesn't
sound much on paper, but seeing the four of them acting through it is
comedy gold for sure.
