A day in the life of amateur detectives Jerry (Richard Denning)
and Pamela (Barbara Britton) North: Jerry claims he has to work till late,
but Pamela finds out that he's actually moonlighting as the judge of a
beauty pageant - and she finds out that one of the participants looks
exactly like her. So she decides to pay her splitting image, Kitty, a
visit ... only to find out that Kitty is a regular bitch whom several
people want to see dead, including gangster Gus (Dick Rich) whom she's
blackmailing, Gus's girlfriend fellow model Mona (Ellen Stansbury), and
Maude (Adrienne Marden), the wife of Kitty's manager Mark (Jerome Cowan),
who has fallen in love with Kitty and wants to leave Maude.
And too, someone kills Kitty before the show starts. Unaware of that,
Pamela decides to take Kitty's place in the contest, just for fun, and
wins, totally confusing her husband. After the show, Jerry and Pamela
reunite and find Kitty's dead body - and they realize there's someone out
there who will now want to kill Pamela, taking her for Kitty. So Jerry and
Pamela set up a trap - and after Gus and Mona are both cleared of
suspicion, Maude turns out to be the murderer but is apprehended just
before she can kill Pamela.
Typical early TV crime comedy deeply rooted of course in the squeaky
clean world of the 1950's, where a murder is a relatively harmless affair,
and the solving of a murder case is a jolly adventure more than anything
else. If you are not put off by TV kitsch, 1950's style though, this can
come across as moderately charming.
