For days now, Monae (Delea Mowatt) has driven her sister and flatmate
Kelly (J.D. Achille) crazy: She sits in her room at her keyboard all day,
playing the same tune, her eyes are always transfixed at her old-fashioned
telephone, as if she expected it to ring, and sometimes she even dials a
number, but hangs up before anybody answers, and she won't even leave the
house unless it's absolutely necessary. Fact is, her boyfriend, who meant
everything to her, has broken up with her a few weeks back to be with
another woman, but Monae isn't ready to give him up, not without closure
anyhow ... but as she's on the passive agressive side, she's unable to
make the first step and instead lets the loneliness of her room drive her
to despair ... Monae's Room is a nice little psycho
drama with sprinkles of thriller, horror and even comedy that manages to
tell and even resolve a very intimate story in a mere 20 minutes with only
two actresses and very minimal locations and props, and manages to stay
interesting throughout, as it makes us share the lead character's feelings
by staying very close to her throughout, even listening to her inner
monologue at times (set to fitting music, too), and not exaggerating
things. And take two competent actresses, and you've got a pretty good
short!
