Now there's an interesting concept for a documentary, as it's partly
based on a play, with Lillian Carter in the movie played by the play's
co-writer Carol Swarbrick, but also features plenty of topical interviews
with, among others, Lillian's son, President Jimmy Carter, his wife
Rosalynn, and former White House correspondent Sam Donaldson, as well as
some archive footage of the real Lillian Carter on several TV shows. And
this blend of real and staged content paints a really powerful picture
with a woman full of resolve, who, as a nurse, would reject racism when it
was still mainstream, who well into retirement age would go to India to
help out as a nurse, and who would still later in life help her son out on
the campaign trail more resolutely, and with more charm and dry wit, than
most other presidents' mothers. And even if she seems to lack the
diplomatic skills of her son Jimmy - being to outspoken for that -, it's
easy where he has gotten his resolve but also his sense of humour and
unwavering righteousness from. That said, despite its topic this is not a
political film per se, it doesn't discuss politics, it's just a portrayal
of a truly impressive woman, and how she affected a man who might only
have served as president for one term, but has then and since put his
stamp on history ...
