When it comes to movies, they really don'c come more unusual than Mental
Aquarium: The Collected Short Films and Trailers of Andrew Buckner -
and that's not just for this anthologies very experimental approach, but
also because the individual shorts vary wildly in ... pretty much
everything: There are poems, there are genre shorts, comedies, parodies,
and intentionally moronic (fake) trailers, side by side with what appears
to be blog entries and trains of thoughts, as well as mood pieces, and
while some are serious, almost to the point of being pretentious, you can
almost be sure that the next one's funny in one way or another. Now this
sounds like a right mess (and "mess" is a word Buckner uses for
several of his movies in the credits), but actually the whole thing is
very coherent, as while all the shorts might differ in theme and story,
they are very consistent in their unusual cinematic language, including a
predilection for the absurd, abstract and even surreal. Now this sure
isn't a film for everyone, for lack of easy-to-follow narration or easily
decipherable spectacle, but a fascinating watch for all with an open mind
for something (very) different ...
