The zombie virus has struck the US, and those who have been bitten by zombies turn into zombies themselves within 8 or so weeks. The gouvernment does a pretty good job containing the virus though, shipping the infected of into rehabilitation camps ... only that these camps are actually concentration camps, and those who end up there have little more choice than turn or be eaten.

Teen runaway Maggie (Abigail Breslin) has been bitten not long ago, and is about to be shipped to a camp, but her farmer dad Wade (Arnold Schwarzenegger) comes to pick her up, and thanks to some connections he has she's left to his care ... which doesn't come without its problems, as Maggie's little brother and sister (Aiden & Carsen Flowers) are pretty much immediately shipped away to relatives to keep them out of harm's way, and her stepmom Caroline (Joely Richardson) doesn't fully trust Maggie due to her condition. Maggie though tries to lead a life as ordinary as possible, a life that includes a walk through the woods and partying with friends - but she's reminded of her condition almost constantly, be it by the fact that her boyfriend (Bryce Romero) suffers under the same condition as she does and is eventually shipped off to a camp, seeing her dad having to beam the neighbours heads in after they have turned, or cutting her own finger and having to chop it off in fear of it being an additional source of infection. Eventually even Caroline leaves, and the more apparent it becomes to Wade that Maggie hasn't long, the more erratic he gets. So before long, everything might be heading for a big catastrophe ...

Alledgedly Arnold Schwarzenegger's movie with the lowest budget since the original Terminator (and from the looks of this one, I wouldn't be surprised), this is actually one of the more interesting (albeit lesser known) movies in his filmography, a zombie film that doesn't follow genre formula but works as an interesting character study, and is more about the love between a father and his daughter than any undead activities (of which there's very little in this film). And in regards to characters (and their portrayals) this movie really works, the characters and their emotions feel real, there's next to no exaggeration there. Plus the film looks really good as it succeeds in bringing the desparation felt in the movie across visually as well by using a certain colour slate, but without being too in-your-face about it. What doesn't work quite so well in the film though is that it seems to run out of ideas before long and tries to make the same point over and over again, thus gets a bit repetitive. However, it's still an interesting genre entry, and nice to see Schwarzenegger handling something other than genre fare for a change.
