Commander Hall (Conway Tearle) is bound to embark on an expedition to
fly a zeppelin over the Sout Pole, but on the eve of his departure, he has
to learn that his wife Myriam (Virginia Valli) is in love with his first
officer Tom (Ricardo Cortez). This alone would be enough to spoil the
voyage of any man, but then, when southbound, the zeppelin gets into bad
weather & storms aplenty, with Myriam having to listen to it all via
news bulletins on the radio.
Finally, the zeppelin makes it to the southpole though, but not after
they have turned arond to go back, the problems start: The ice on the
zeppelin's hull proves to heavy, so the zeppelin starts falling &
finally crashes, the radio goes bust before they can inform anyone about
their position, & they only have food for 8 days. So Commander Hall
forms little search parties, to go looking for help or try to hail a
searchplane ... but soon enough everyone but Hall & Tom has died, be
it from ravines or Antarctic frost.
Then though, Ltd Wallace (Duke Martin) shows up in a relief plane ...
but in his plane there's only room for one of them ... & Hall seds Tom
home, because to him his wife's happiness is more important than anything
else. Later, when Wallace comes back for him, his plane disappears ...
Back in the USA, Tom, the only survivor of the expedition, is the hero
of the day, but when he pays a visit to Myriam, he finds her not quite as
receptive as he thought her to be, as she grieves for her husband aftger
all, & for his noble gesture to give his life for his wife's
happiness, she has fallen in love with him all over again ... & then,
out of nowhere, the radio announces that Ltd Wallace's plane has
reappeared after all, & Wallace has saved the life of commander Hall
...
Immediately Myriam sends him a telegram saying that she loves him.
Though the film shows the almost contagious fascination for the
explorer/adventurer typical for the 1920's, & some of the sets &
shots of the zeppelin are quite impressive too, this cannot hide the fact
that the film has very little plot, which is derived of all the tension it
could have had. Virginia Valli's terrible overacting is almost funny
though.
(The film wa released in both silent & sound version, my review
is based on the sound version.)
