After an atomic rocket has crashlanded somewhere on a pacific island 3
scientists (John Hoyt, Whit Bissell, Hugh Beaumont) are sent to that
island with three members of the air force (Cesar Romero, Chick Chandler,
Sid Melton) to retrieve the blackbox. They somehow crashland on the island
after their airplane's instruments go haywire, and soon figure for the
rocket they have to climb a plateau - which they incredibly enough find
filled to the brim with uranium ... and dinosaurs. And most of these
dinosaurs, even the planteaters, are rather unfriendly. Air Force Major
Nolan (Cesar Romero) soon suspects one of the scientists, Rostov (John
Hoyt), of being a traitor, especially after he failed to save the life of
one of the other scientists (Whit Bissell) during the climb, but when he
later saves the life of the other - who has gotten into a predicament
entirely due to his own recklessness - and risks his life doing so, Nolan
notices he was only blinded by Rostov's Russian name. Our heroes are
almost at the end of their wits, and on constant run from the dinosaurs of
course (much of which they shoot by the way), they find the rocket -
surrounded by dinosaurs. But Willie (Sid Melton), the klutz of the party,
creates a diversion, and even if he loses his own life in the process, the
others at least manage to retrieve the blackbox and make it back to
safety. And not a minute too late, because once they're off the plateau,
the resident volcano decides to break out and lay everything to waste ... Cult
starlet Acquanetta makes a rather pointless appearance as native girl
pointing the way in this one. For some reason, the film has an
awful long exposition to set up a lot of backstory that's pretty much
never looked back on once our heroes climb up to the plateau. And the
movie only gets real good when they are up their (and everything is tinted
green to suggest radiation). Now the film is certainly not the most
original that dinosaur cinema has to offer, and while the stop motion
dinosaurs are nicely animated, they don't look particularly impressive or
scary - but the whole thing is well enough paced to entertain at least,
sets its scenes of suspense and of action in all the right moments, and
once our heroes are up the plateau, there's hardly a dull moment. Not
great, probably not even particularly good ... but fun!
