Little Leon (Pedro Sánchez) is terrorized by his alcoholic father
(Michael Segal), who reigns the household with violence, and not at all
protected by his mother (Tania Mercader), who's just to weak to put up a
fight. Leon's spirit animal though is the lion, and one day, it just
manifests itself to violently punish those who have tormented Leon. But is
this the whole truth, or is there something even more sinister at work? If
horror with maybe a dash of fantasy is your thing, then Lion is
most definitely a film for you: While on one hand the film's violent
enough to please every self-respecting horror fan, its story - from the
"deep in the woods" setting to the manifestation of the spirit
animal - also has something fairy tale-like to it, a certain sense of
wonder not usually found in genre flicks. But an assured directorial hand
brings this blend to life, and also sees to it that the anti-domestic
violence message isn't brought home with the swing of a sledgehammer but
delivered in a sensible way. Totally worth a look!
