Japan, the 16th century: Lord Nobunaga (Ryo Kase) has had the country
in his iron grip for the longest of times, so much so that his right hand
Murashige (Kenichi Endo) plans a rebellion - that tragically fails. All of
his entourage is slaughtered but Mitsuhide manages to flee, prompting Lord
Nobunaga to put a bounty on his head, a bounty so alluring nobody can
resist: Succession on his throne in Nobunaga's own son's stead. And soon
enough all warlords far and wide are employed in a game that's a mix of
intrigue and all-out war to get their hands on Murashige and in
consequence what's ultimately the biggest prize in the country ...
Now admittedly, the plot of Kubi is a little hard to
follow given its huge cast of important characters - who are introduced by
title cards to bring at least some order into the confusion - and the many
twists and turns in the story. That said, the film's at the same time
entirely enjoyable still as it finds just the right balance between an
intelligent (if convoluted) plot and all-out violent action, with even
some irony thrown into the proceedings, and tells its story at a steady
pace while the direction is nothing short of flawless, making this a
pretty awesome watch for sure.
