Pretending to be big-time Hollywood producers, penniless
good-for-nothings Johnson (Spencer Williams) and Green (July Jones) find
abode at Mama-Lou's place, where she lives with her workshy hubby Sam
(Leonard Duncan) and her two daughters, goodiee-two-shoes Barbara
(Dauphine Moore) and rebellious teen Florida (Katherine Moore). And while
Barbara wants nothing more than to win the local beauty contest and even
persuades Johnson and Green to help her with her performance, Florida
plans to elope with her no-good boyfriend Johnny (Howard Galloway).
Eventually, Barbara wins her beauty contest, and she and her dad end up
in Johnny's Juke Joint where Florida is about to elope, but virtually in
the last moment, Johnson and Green intervene, and in the end Mama-Lou
gives Florida a serious spanking for her disobedience ...
As is often the case with all-black films made on a shoestring, this
all-black comedy easily outdoes its more expensive all-white conterparts
boasting a very cool jazz score by Red Calhoun and band. Apart from that
though, there is very little else to recommend this film, its leads
Spencer Williams and July Jones - trying to pull off a black version of Laurel
and Hardy - fail to impress as comedians, the storytelling is
definitely off, and the story itself is feeble to say the least.
Rather a waste of time.
