It's Lucy (Lucille Ball) and Ricky (Desi Arnaz) neighbours Ethel
(Vivian Vance) and Fred's (William Frawley) 18th wedding day, and Ethel
wants to celebrat it by the four of them going to a nightclub - and Lucy
seconds that motion and makes up a plan to persuade the men to come along.
Thing is, the men would rather go to a boxing match the same night - and
charm doesn't work on the men as they've turned on their charm factor to
sweettalk the women. Eventually, as Lucy and Ethel realise they're not
succeeding with their strategy, they tell Ricky and Fred they'll have some
other dates for the nightclub then - of course they don't, but the men
don't know this so they need dates of their own to go to the nightclub to
have an eye on Lucy and Ethel. But the Ricky and Fred are as off the
market as Lucy and Ethel, and not knowing any date-able women themselves
they call the town's matchmaker who knows just "everybody" - and
it's exactly whom Lucy later calls as well to find out about the husbands'
scheme. So Lucy and Ethel disguise themselves to show up as Ricky and
Fred's pretty awful dates for the night - and it actually takes the men a
while to look through that ruse. But ultimately Ricky and Fred agree to go
out with Luca and Ethel - to the boxing match ... Now of
course, compared to today's sitcoms (a dying species in itself in the
2020s), this episode and I Love Lucy as a whole seems a bit
antiquated, it's very stagey, it's very restricted in both actors and
sets, and of course its strictly 1950s attitude doesn't ring true today
anymore - all of which really makes it such a fine trip down memory lane,
and that said, what the series might lack in production value it sure
makes up in the acting department, as the talents of all involved but
especially of Lucille Ball are undisputed to this day, and the
performances still shine and make many a joke that has since become sitcom
staple funny again. In other words, this is a worthy trip down memory
lane.
