As always, Dr Bellows (Hayden Rorke), NASA psychiatrist, is out to
"get" Major Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman) for his shenanigans,
which are usually the result of his own private genie Jeannie's (Barbara
Eden) magic. This time he catches Tony at his home floating through the
air - and since Dr Bellows has just made a fool out of himself in front of
General Peterson (Barton MacLane), he now has Tony sign a statement that
he was actually floating. Tony of course claims he's just a amateur
magician trying out one of his tricks, but that didn't come across wholly
successful, so Dr Bellows has him perform at a charity talent show. Tony
tries everything to find a specifically unconvincing trick to make himself
float, especially since Dr Bellows has brought Nestor the Great (Chet
Stratton) along to confirm Tony's using real magic ... but at the time of
Tony's performance, Dr Bellows sees to it that Tony's device to make him
float is removed, and he threatens with consequences shouldn't Tony float
all the same. Thank God Jeannie is in the audience, and she makes Tony
float - which gets him into a different sort of dilemma, because now
Nestor claims there is no way this can be a trick, so Tony must be
floating for real ... upon which Jeannie makes Nestor float too - and once
General Peterson sees just about anyone can do it, he to Tony's joy and Dr
Bellows' dismay just dismisses the whole thing. Even though
this episode uses one of the series' favourite recurring themes (Dr
Bellows is made a fool of), and even though the story does not make
perfect sense (why would Tony sign a statement that he could float, and
why can Dr Bellows blackmail him into floating on stage, and why is he in
a jam if it doesn't work), this is a fun one because of a couple of great
sight gags, funny dialogue and the dependable ensemble cast giving really
good performances.
