So filmmaker Kelly Hughes shoots this webseries, The Mephisto Box
... and then he gets in touch with Alison Arngrim, Nellie Oleson from the
series Little House on the Prairie, and having always been a
fan of the series, he asks her to be in the series - to which she
enthusiastically agrees, having always wanted to be in a horror movie. Now
a little background info on Kelly Hughes, he has been making horror since
early 1990s, first shot to relative fame with his public access TV series Heart
Attack Theatre, and later making possibly the first crossdressing
zombie flick La Cage aux Zombies. His films are usually low budget
and full of very crazy ideas (and The Mephisto Box would be
no exception), but he makes them with an enthusiasm that's really
infective - and judging from the interviews Alison Arngrim gives in this
documentary, she truly enjoyed the experience and was game to even his
wildest ideas - ultimately leaving Hughes with tons and tons of footage
though he had no idea how to tie together, narratively ... To
enjoy this documentary, it really doesn't matter if you're into indie
horror, if you know who Kelly Hughes is, or even who Alison Arngrim is -
because it's put together so lovingly that the enthusiasm of everybody on
screen (and Hughes himself behind the camera) is really transmitted to the
audience. Plus, this movie also gives a good insight of how movies are
done when one doesn't have a million or more Dollars on hand and has to
improvise, how the creative process works differently (and occasionally
runs wild) on small films, and how much fun it actually can be to make an
off-the-rails horror movie. Most definitely worth a watch!
