Count Yoster (Lukas Amman), crime novelist and gentleman detective, and
his driver Johann (Wolfgang Wölz) take a trip to Vienna, where a virtual
heap of Van Goghs are sold at a certain auction house, many of them
probably fakes. Yoster meets up with auctioneer Nafziger (Rudi Schippel)
and tells him he's interested in buying a Van Gogh - as long as it's fake.
Thus he seemingly gives away his game, and makes Nafziger taking the one
Van Gogh on offer out of the next auction, much to the dismay of much of
the clientele. Nafziger is of course in on the forgery, together with Dr.
Stagel (Heinz-Leo Fischer), who now rushes to the auction to bid for a
painting in style of Van Gogh painted by a certain Krailing - but Yoster
outbids him. He later finds out that Krailing currently resides at the
sanitarium run by Dr. Stagel, and paying the place a visit, he and Johann
are taken captive by Stagel's goons, but Johann knows how to get out of a
tight squeeze, and together, he and Yoster ultimately defeat Stagel and
Nafziger and free Krailing, who has been kept drugged and under the
impression that he really is Van Gogh - and this way he churned out all
the fakes ... A TV krimi for the whole family, with an
easy-to-follow plot where everything's spelled out and that's devoid of
rough edges, easily distinguishable good and bad guys, bits of comedy, and
of course a happy ending, all within 25 or so minutes. Now truth to be
told, this first episode seems old-fashioned even for the late 1960s
(though the series ran for 62 episodes, and with interruptions until 1976,
always with Amman and Völzer in the leads), but still scores some points
on the nostalgia scale, even if it seems less than cool for its era.
