Joy (Kimmi Monteiro), a former stripper, has just come out of rehab,
and has to deal with what the world throws at her, which isn't always
pretty, as nothing seems to be easy, be it finding a job or making up with
her family. David's (Paul Noonan) life is falling apart, his family has
turned their backs on him, he's thrown out of the fleabag hotel he's been
staying at, and his money's running out. And he tries to make himself
forget his situation with booze and drugs - so basically he's driving his
life right into a concrete wall. Joy and David's lives might have more
to do with one another than one can spot at first sight, and maybe one can
turn the story of the other ... Get Up Eight is a
compelling little drama that manages to bring its message across by not
just hammering it home but using clever storytelling as its mode of
delivery. And of course, it also helps that the main characters are
relatable in all their shortcomings, and the directorial effort is subtle
enough to give the movie's solid cast room to breathe. In all, a really
nice movie.
