While the earth is threatened - or maybe just visited, who knows for
sure - by a UFO, estranged siblings Casey (Anna Shields) and Dan (James
Liddell) meet at their equally estranged scientist father's (Paul
Kandarian) place after he has gone missing, and they start bonding again
over worries for their father and the fact that they're both down on their
luck. Casey manages to hack into dad's computer and stumbles upon a series
of videos her dad has made about the UFO and about the extinction of
humankind that seems to be imminent. Now dad has left behind a machine and
a computer virus that are designed to avoid extinction, but it's a race
against time for our siblings to find out everything there is to know
about both to properly apply them - that and there's a local (Chris
Cimperman), who has been taken over by otherworldly beings and turned into
an alien whose sole purpose it is to stop them from doing just that, and
in the process killing everyone getting into his way ... Now I
admit as much, I did not fully grasp all the more esoteric elements in the
movie, and I'm not sure if really understanding them is even necessary to
enjoy the film, which is a very nice blend of mystery and horror/sci-fi on
one hand, character study and family drama on the other, where scenes of
suspense and outbursts of violence find their place right next to very
intimate scenes and moments with a lot of heart, thanks to a cleverly
built-up script, a suitably subtle directorial effort, and a very strong
small ensemble cast, making this a very unusual but very watch-worthy
piece of genre cinema.
