It should have been a very ordinary family dinner, with Angela (April
Hartman) cooking for her husband Tanner (Matthew Roy) and her mother
Claudia (Sheril Rodgers) - but let's face it, this is anything but a happy
family, as Claudia has never approved of Angela being an artist, and
Angela has long been annoyed by mum's constant nit-picking. And Tanner
isn't much of a help here, he tries to stay out of everything to the point
where one might think he's spineless. It seems to have been like this for
a while, but this time Claudia has gone one step further, having actually
poisoned her daughters salad, as she wants to get her hands on her
daughters inheritance. And Tanner? He does nothing to help his wife or
call emergency - because this family has more than one dirty secret, and
this story is far from over yet ... Envious is a very
nice and nicely mean little thriller that manages to tell quite a tale in
rather short a time, without ever leaving the dining room. And
directorially, the film successfully creates a dignified and tasteful
atmosphere to totally contrast the on-screen goings-on, given the film a
darkly ironic edge, which is only augmented by the strong performances. Very
cool short indeed!
