Hollywood, the 1930s: Successful film director John Warner (Paul
Kandarian) meets with his trophy wife Faith (Samantha McMahon) for dinner
at a swanky restaurant for the rich and famous. And while he clearly
enjoys showing off to everybody in the place how he's pampering her, he
fails to really hear her complaints about him never having time for her
and mistakes a dinner in public every blue moon for quality time. Keeping
this in mind, it's not entirely surprising that they have different ideas
about "dessert" ... A very lavishly furnished period
piece that really gets the era right in looks, feel and music, Dessert
is more though than just a glitzy surface, digging deep into gender
inequalities of the period (and in a way all periods since), but not in a
on-your-nose manner but through well fleshed out leads (and performances
that go with it), clever dialogue and character interactions, and a subtle
yet pointed directorial effort, making this one a very nice piece of
intelligent entertainment.
