Nikki (Nicole D'Angelo) is in a relationship with Ethan (James Duval),
and it seems the relationship is a very happy one - if it wasn't for the
fact that Nikki's also a high class prostitute, the best her madame and
foster mother Rose (Elena Krausz) has on her roster. Of course, Ethan
doesn't know about this, and as absorbed as he is in his work as an
experimental electronic musician, he's also unlikely to ever find out. So
he also doesn't know that Nikki has recently been raped by one Maurice
(Steve Polites), who since has tried time and again to make up to her -
only succeeding in making things worse though. Also, of late pimp Kemper
(Sal Landi) has tried to get her to sign up with him, and ultimately paid
her so much she could no longer refuse, infuriating Rose in the process.
This all puts an enormous strain on Nikki, so much so that she escapes to
a drug-induced wonderland. And while her drug habit drains her body more
and more in the real world, the parallel world proves to be a source of
self-empowerment - until it isn't anymore, as other people from the real
world are crossing over and show their real faces, like her best friend
Greta (Jamie Bernadette) proving to be a manipulative bitch, Kemper an
abusive asshole, and suddenly it's of all people Maurice she can trust the
most ... Darling Nikki is nothing if not an extremely
weird film: It has many hallmarks of your typical erotic thriller, but
then at times veers off into complete fantasy including very direct
references to Alice
in Wonderland, it has its trippy moments, at other time works
like a music video or borrows from David Lynch. And true, at times this
mix comes across as a bit uneven as the elements don't always blend quite
like they're supposed to, giving the thing a bit of a choppy feeling, as a
whole the film is still a quite unique and enjoyably odd experience.
