In the not-too-distant future, US president Henricksen (Vivica A. Fox)
and her Secretary of Defense Weathers (Daniel Baldwin) hire war hero Ryker
(Stink Fisher) to assemble a team of mercenaries to break into a spaceship
that carries an alien lifeform, the titular crossbreed (Devanny Pinn),
which can be used as a biological weapon. Now the info that Ryker has is
that the ship's abandoned, but when he and his ragtag team (Antoine
Lanier, John T. Woods, Jason McNeil, Brandyn T. Williams) enter the ship,
they find themselves facing quite some opposition, and really have to
shoot their way through those on board to get to the crossbreed and the
one behind it all, politician gone rogue Miller (Mu-Shaka Benson). But as
they consider themselves to have accomplished the mission and captured a
baddie as a bonus, things go bad as the crossbreed has no intention of
being captured and is more than capable to defend itself and really take
the war to those who come after her ... Veteran
and fan fave Vernon Wells plays the mercenary who originally captured the
crossbreed - but didn't live to tell it. Crossbreed
is a pretty interesting mix of genres, actually, of course it's science
fiction but the first half also works as a futuristic heist movie while
the second half is more a space slasher in the vein of Alien,
plus there are plenty of nods to 1980s action cinema, with even bits of
political thriller thrown in - and yet, the film comes across as made out
of one mold entirely, thanks to a clever script, a solid, briskly paced
directorial effort, and a strong ensemble cast - with a thumbs up going to
Brandyn T. Williams who has made what's usually the weakest role in a film
like this truly his own. In all, a highly entertaining genre movie!
