A trio of gangsters kidnap little Florence (Annabell), the daughter of
rich car salesman Danville (Olivier Mathot), to hold her for ransom - but
somehow the exchange goes wrong, so the three take the girl and flee to
Africa, where they hide out at Antoine's trading post ... in the middle of
cannibal country.
However, the three do not really appreciate Antonio's hospitality, so
one day when he is out, one of the gangsters, Mario, rapes Antonio's
lovely young wife Manuela (Pamela Stanford). When Antonio learns about
that, he takes Mario out into the woods, ties him to a tree, and then
signals the cannibals that dinner is ready ...
Manuela has meanwhile found a way to let Danville know where his
daughter is, so Danville soon gathers a few mercenaries, a cop and his
wife (Silvia Solar) and heads for Antonio's trading post.
When our trio of gangsters (yes, they are three again, despite the fact
that one of them has been eaten up already) see Danville's car
approaching, they take little Florence and head off into the jungle.
Soon enough, they fall victims to the cannibals, who first tie them to
stakes, then eat them. Only Florence they leave unharmed.
Meanwhile Danville and company have taken after the gangsters and have
their own run-in with the cannibals, but manage to put them to flight.
Later, when they arrive in cannibal village, they find the cannibals a
rather friendly people who have taken care of teh gangsters for them and
give Danville back his daughter, no questions asked ...
Produced at the tail-end of the short cannibal movie boom, this is most
certainly one of the worst of the genre. Now I admit that cannibal films from
that era were never intellectually all that challenging (with the possible
exception of Cannibal Holocaust)
and the genre wasn't necessarily a seal for quality (rather the opposite),
but still, this one has taken the cannibal film as such to new depths.
The story is not only badly written, it's also dead boring, which is
not at all helped by an uninvolving, uninteresting, indifferent direction
that pads out unimportant scenes endlessly and doesn't even try to create
suspense (which is especially apparent in the underwhelming finale). Also
no attempts were made to make the jungle look like a jungle, and most of
the natives are played by white men in warpaint, with their underpants
frequently visible under their loincloths. Oh, and then there's the
highway that is clearly visible right next to the cannibal village in
several shots ... now please !
Definitely not worth a look, it's not even so bad it's funny.
PS: Several sources still link this film to Jess Franco, mainly because
his stock actors Antonio Mayans and Olivier Mathot are in this one.
However, these claims are false.
