In a dystopian future, loner Nnen (R. Saeed Green) whose only company
on all his travels is his little robot that looks like nothing more than a
toy, tries to broker a deal with gangster Wonnie (Yoon Chol Park), who
turns out to be a very learned man, with all his knowledge of old liquors,
ancient weapons and the like - but he's also the ultimate cynic, always
trying to challenge Nnen, knowing that his bodyguards (Steven M. Digiacco,
Joseph F. Digiacco) would never let anything happen to him. Eventually, he
lays his eyes on our hero's robot, and very obviously he is aware of its
real value - which is why he first tries to buy it, then forces Nnen to
accept the challenge to an old-fashioned duel which Wonnie is very likely
to win as he has set up the rules. But of course, there's more to a duel
than just rules ... Despite its science fiction setting and
playing with genre mainstays, The Campbell is above all else a
suspense piece: Despite rather little actual action, the thing is tense as
can be, thanks to a tight directorial effort, sharp dialogue, interesting
characters played by a competent cast, and a suitably unnerving sound
design. And the film has a really nice pay-off at the end as well, one
that's bound to surprise. Totally recommended!
