A cargo pilot (Mads Mikkelsen) has crash-landed his plane smack center
in the arctic, and since he knows the chances of him being found in an
area as lonesome, white and vast as the North Pole are comparatively slim,
he tries to survive on his own ingenuity as well as he can. Eventually, a
helicopter passes by, those inside see him, try to land, and the
helicopter crashes. The pilot dies in an instant but his wife (Maria
Thelma Smáradóttir) survives, if gravely injured and hardly responsive.
But she gives our hero a new reason of life beyond just surviving, and
while he might have given into his fate earlier, now he's hell-bent on
making in to the next arctic science station, with her in tow on a sleigh,
facing whatever threats might await him, and dealing with setback after
setback ... In the second half of the 2010s, Robinson
Crusoe-styled survival tales in increasingly more unusual terrains
have become rather popular in the wake of Ridley Scott's Matt Damon
starrer The Martian, and Arctic is one of those - and it
does what it does very well, using its location to its full advantage on
both a narrative and a visual level, employing tension and suspense to
move the story forward, and delving deep into the mindset of its main
character, even though dialogue here is very scarce and limited to the
essential. And while not wholly original, this is really a film that keeps
one glued to one's seat - just better bring an extra coat to fight of the
tilm's wintery vibe ...
