A woman (Gloria John) steps out of the shower, gets ready for her date,
then leaves the house ... which shouldn't be interesting at all until you
see the other side of the story: An intuder (Paul Lilley) is in the
apartment with the woman, and he's as quiet as can be, hides in the
wardrobe to escape being detected, and leaves via the fire escape once he
makes a noise attracting the woman's attention ... which ultimately leaves
her none the wiser, so she just leaves the house - and out on the streets,
he goes after her, follows her to the subway station and into the subway
... which is where she notices him for the first time as the creep who
can't takes his eyes off her. When she gets off the subway and walks on,
she can't shake the feeling he's still after her ... and even if she can't
spot him anymore, she also can't shake him - she may run all she want,
he's always nearby. And eventually he attacks - but she's not a helpless
victim, she manages to fight him off, even knock him out. She returns
home, visibly shaken by the experience (and who wouldn't be) - but he
knows where she lives, and he has already managed to enter her place
undetected once ... In its approach, Ambient Evil is on
the experimental side inasmuch as it tells its story in real time (apart
from the beginning that shows the set-up from two different perspectives
back-to-back) - which is of course not the most novel idea in the history
of cinema, but a challenge nevertheless. And writer/director Nathyn
Masters makes it work too, as he doesn't rely on the real time gimmick too
much but makes an effort to tell a tight and engaging story, a story that
takes Hitchcock's concept of creating suspense to heart (especially in the
twice told set-up scene) and greatly profits from the shifting perspective
the story's told from, including POV shots and the like. That Masters has
picked a strong duo of actors of course doesn't hurt one bit, either,
making this a real treat to watch! And if this has gotten you
at all interested, you might want to watch the movie (for free) here right
now:
