Your new movie Human Hibachi: The Beginning - in a few words, what is it about?

Human Hibachi: The Beginning is a look at Jin (Wataru Nishida) in his home country of Japan. It shows how he got his start and how the Human Hibachi films began.

With Human Hibachi: The Beginning being a prequel to Human Hibachi - how close are these two films actually related?

They are very related. The prequel basically shows how strong Jin’s character is. Jin is the restaurant owner in the first Human Hibachi.

The whole concept of the killer bamboo - did you put any actual research into this?

I have always been fascinated with bamboo. I think it’s an amazing plant. With this type of torture being used in Japan, I felt it was perfect for this film.

You just have to talk about the effects work in your movie for a bit!

Thanks for complimenting the effects. My wife, Charmaine, did the effects for this film. I’m so proud of her. We had much time to discuss things as we live together and she was able to take my vision and make it happen. The bamboo was tricky to use but she ended up doing great.

What can you tell us about Human Hibachi: The Beginning's approach to horror?

The approach on this film was to use the foreign language as a scare tactic. Hearing a foreign language and not knowing what is really being said makes it that much scarier. Obviously the subtitles help but just hearing it makes it scary. Also, bamboo torture is seldom used in horror so I wanted to do something different.

A few words about your overall directorial approach to your story at hand?

The directorial approach to this film was to make sure the Japanese language was spot on to what was happening in the scene. Secondly it was to make sure the bamboo impalement looks great.

Do talk about Human Hibachi: The Beginning's cast, and why exactly these people?

The cast was amazing. Wataru Nishida I worked on in the other two Human Hibachi films, so we had that chemistry built in. Zachary Chung Pun, had worked on the first Human Hibachi, so he was familiar with the project. Ilana Lo and Nicholas Ear were great additions and really delivered as well.

What can you tell us about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere?

We shot the film in one night. It was at Raymond Bolden jr’s house. Ray was one of the main characters in Human Hibachi 2. His wife grows bamboo and that’s exactly what I was looking for, it worked perfect. Everyone on set did great and it was a fun time.

The $64-question of course, where can Human Hibachi: The Beginning be seen?

Human Hibachi: The Beginning is not available yet, however it will be included in the franchise box set on DVD, and should be getting a VOD release too. You can follow Human Hibachi Franchise page on Facebook and on Instagram for updates.

Anything you can tell us about audience and critical reception of your movie?

The first two movies have built a strong cult following around the world. The DVDs have sold in 10 countries around the world. So I expect this to do the same.

Will there ever be yet another Human Hibachi movie? And/or any other future projects you'd like to share?

We have been throwing the idea of doing a third Human Hibachi film, but it has to be the right timing.

Thanks for the interview!
