The Minister for Administrative Affairs Hacker (Paul Eddington)
receives an unofficial confidential report from army Major Saunders (John
Fortune) that British weapons were found in the hands of Italian
terrorists - and Hacker wants to do the right thing, report it to the PM
and expose a scandal. However, when he tells it to his Permanent Secretary
Humphrey (Nigel Hawthorne), he doesn't seem eager to do anything at all,
since it would only cause problems and irritate the foreign market - after
all, the weapons were exported to Italy. And when Hacker wants to
go over his head, he arranges for the Chief Whip (Edward Jewesbury) to
pretty much threaten to destroy his career, should he go through withthis
nonsense.
So Hacker, once again discouraged, decides to do nothing - when he
receives a letter from Saunders that would prove that he knows about the
terrorists and such ... so once again Hacker has to rely on Humphrey's
more refined skills to do nothing: To file a report that essentially tells
about the terrorist threat with the PM's office, but formulated in a way
that nobody could ever find out what the report might actually mean ...
The Whisky Priest is probably one of the best episodes of Yes
Minister's season 3: The satire is sharp and to the point,
dialogue is great and the actors are as always excellent.
