It's really a morning like any other - and actually a very nice day
with good weather and all, and perfect to go outside as it might be one of
the last really nice days of summer. And like pretty much everyday, Paul
(John Campeau), a radio host as smug as they come, is doing his call-in
show, one that's later in the day to have then New York mayor Rudy
Giuliani as a guest, but right now it's just random callers with random
request - like Lorelai (Amy Thomason), who has just called in to wish her
husband happy birthday, while on an elevator to her office. But then
there's a loud bang, a rumble goes through her building, and her elevator
gets stuck. And looking out the window, Paul sees that the unfathomable
has just happened - an airplane has hit the very building she's stuck in,
the World Trade Center, and it's September 11th, 2001 ... A
very compelling, touching film that takes what was a national tragedy and
boils it down to a very intimate character piece that really hits the mark
as it avoids spectacle and instead puts an emphasis on structure, drawing
the viewer, who's more probably than not already able to guess the
outcome, into the narrative by a proper build-up and by making its central
characters relatable. And thanks to a subtle directorial effort that gives
the actors their space, and a very solid cast, this has turned out to be a
very moving featurette that manages to add its own facets to a well-known
disaster.
