A load of really stupid horror films came out of the 1950s, many
centered around werewolves and aliens from outer space. Giant insects
and dinosuars were a big thing too, but in all, the bulk of the flicks
from this decade remain saved for a boring night ...
The Werewolf is one
such film. Not totally bad, but not great either, it is worth a look if
the chance arises. The makeup also, looks decent, as opposed to some of
the counterpart project which make the manbeats look like trick or
treaters doctored up with a drugstore makeup kick
The plot is somewhat trite, again capitalizing on those "science
goes haywire" trends from the era. A man is involved in a car crash
and is rescued by two mad doctors who inject him with a serum to attempt
to save his life. This medicine is no medical breakthrough, however, for
even though it rejuvinates him, it turns him into a howling, drooling,
growling, killing ... you guessed it ... werewolf. Well, you can't win them
all.
The murders mount, the suspicions abound and finally the werewolf is
killed. Run of the mill here. The trackdown scenes, however, are very
well done and the final scenes where the monster is indeed done in are
well handled. Some originality here at least. I won't blow the hows and
wheres for those who have not seen it, but the chase and "wolf
hunt" so to speak is the best part of the movie.
Curiously, character actor Gerald Mohr, better known for his western and
detective movies in this same time span, narrates this movie.
