When stageline owner Pop Warner vanishes with the payroll of the local
bank, insurance investigator Ted Sanders (Bob Custer) is called in to
investigate. He soon finds Warner shot & only his dog Rannah (Rin
Tin Tin jr) as a witness to this crime. Unfortunately, the killers,
Nolan (Oscar Gahan), Macklin (Eddie Phillips) & Sam (Ed Cassidy) get
wind of this canine witness & soon want to plug him. Their first
attempt at the dog's life fails though, & so it is decided to leave
Rannah with local beauty (& heiress to the stage line) Molly
(Victoria Vinton). Not only do the villains make more attempts to kill
Rannah, but Sam also decides to take on the identity of deputy Barlow to
have a closer look at Sanders' progress in the case. At first this goes
well, until Sanders & Rannah find the real Barlow, half dead in the
prairie. Now the gangsters make every attempt to silence Barlow before
he can spill the beans, & are eventually lucky in not only that but
in convincing the townfolks that the actual killer of Pop Warner is Ted
Sanders. It is only when Sanders fakes his own death that he can turn
the tables on his adversaries, soon tricking Sam into admitting he had
killed Barlow, whereafter his accomplices kill him & take bank
president Norcross hostage to cover their retreat. But at their hideout,
the gangsters & Norcross (who is actually the head & leader of
the villains, start fighting about the loot, making it easy for Sanders
& company to arrest them - except for Norcross, who jumped at the
first opportunity to escape them, only to, in the final fight, be
dropped from a hanging bridge.
Solid B-Western whodunit that blends all the usual ingredients into an
hour of forseeable but enjoyable entertainment. Rin Tin Tin jr, who
received top-billing on this, is fortunately only playing a supporting
role, so even dog-haters might like this movie. |
