A post-doomsday world centuries in our future: Young Doris is bitten by
vampire Magnus Lee, which is not only bad because it leaves nasty marks on
the neck and the local villagers don't like those bitten by vampires, but
also because Magnus Lee might come back for her and make her his bride.
Thus, Doris hires vampire hunter D, a mysterious loner who is half man,
half vampire. His mission to walk right into the lion's den seems to end
in failure at first, when he is captured by a three-headed dragon and
leaves Doris basically unprotected - which Magnus Lee naturally uses to
his advantage. Somehow though, D manages to kill the dragon and bring
Doris back. It only gets worse after that though, because before you
know it, the vampire's daughter Lamica, who's against her father's union
with a common mortal, his violent manservant and the local mayor's
treacherous son Greco are after Doris as well, each having his or her own
agenda, Doris's best friend Doctor Feringo is turned into a vampire and
her brother is abducted. What's worse still is that Magnus Lee's
manservant actually manages to kill D. And of course, eventually, Magnus
Lee kidnaps Doris again and is already ready to make her his bride in a
ceremony. But wait, D's hacked off talking hand (really) manages to
bring him back just in time, and with the help of Lamica, who has since
figured her kind is doomed, he manages to kill Magnus Lee and free Doris
and Dan. Lamica then commits suicide.
In parts, this anime is
very interesting in its blend of gothic horror and science fiction, all
garnered with a bit of sex and gore, but as a whole, the film doesn't work
quite as well as it should, basically because it's a bit too episodic to
really impress emotionally, plus with so much going on in the film, the
characters themselves remain pretty flat. All that is of course not to
say Vampire Hunter D isn't totally watchable, because it is,
there's plenty in it that at least deserves a look, I'm just stating it
could have been much better if a bit more work was put into the script.
