Commander straker (Ed Bishop) of the UFO defence organisation SHADO has
just deliberately let a UFO pass through all of earth's defense barriers
to land safely in a thinly populated area. Bujt why would he do that,
isn't that endangering the population of that area? Yes and no. Yes
because with a landed UFO, there's an alien (Anthony Chinn) in town, who
soon enough kills a game warden (Godfrey James), too. And no because SHADO
knows next to nothing about the UFOs they are fighting, so if they could
retrieve this one, and undamaged, too, that would be great, and it would
also be great to capture a live alien of course. Unfortunately though, the
alien knows what risk it's taking by having his UFO discovered, so it
destroys it. Then it walks off to the nearest cottage for whatever reason. The
nearest cottage: Liz (Adrienne Corri) and lover Cass (Patrick Mower) are
planning the perfect murder, the shooting of her husband Jack (Allan
Cuthbertson) and make it look like she tried to shoot a robber in self
defense - no court would convict her for this, thanks to their meticulous
planning. Then though, instead of the husband the alien shows up, and
before Liz can even grasp the situation, she has shot it dead. SHADO
arrives only after that but quick enough to round up Liz and Cass and
administer amnesia drugs to make them forget the last 12 hours. Everything
perfect, right? Wrong, because then the husband arrives and it only
dawns upon SHADO operative Foster (Michael Billington) what his wife and
her lover were up to - but SHADO is so top secret an organisation they
just can't report it to the proper authorities ... and thus, a few days
later, Liz and Cass who were made to forget their botched up first
attempt, try again, this time without interference ...
Amusing
ittle blend of science fiction and murder plot that might not be too
convincing in all of its story motives and a little long-winded in some of
its storytelling, but the twist ending makes up for much of this, and of
course the (as usual) first rate cast and a few very nice miniature
effects don't hurt much, either.
