A UFO attacks a Royal Navy Ship, but the Navy shoots it down, and even
though some photographs of it are leaked to the media, the Navy tries to
debunk all UFO-rumours. Commander Straker (Ed Bishop) of the secret alien
defense organisatin SHADO wonders why: It's his job to debunk UFO-rumours,
and the Navy doesn't even know about his organisation. So he investigates
certain Navy operations, but always hits locked doors - upon which Straker
tries a different approach, to have his best employee Paul Foster (Michael
Billington) become quite "friendly" with the Navy Commander
Sheringham's (Edwin Richfield) secretary Sarah (Stephanie Beacham). She's
very attractive, so this is a job Foster utterly enjoys, but he also finds
out that Sarah is apparently somehow communicating with the aliens. Eventually,
Foster finds out that the Navy is about to dump weapons of biological
warfare somewhere in the sea, enough to wipe out the entire human race,
and the UFOs have apparently picked the ship entrusted with the task as
their next target - which would apparently annihilate all mankind. To
cut a long story short, the aliens almost succeed, but at the very last
moment SHADO can locate the Navy-vessel, and their submarine-launched
interceptor Skydiver One emerges from the water just in time to shoot down
the UFO and save the day. Sarah is vindicated at least to a point - she
has turned over vital information to the aliens only because they have
abducted her father ... Later cult actor David Warbeck plays a submarine
captain. Nice little sci-fi-thriller that at least attempts to
put a new spin onto an old story and that twists and turns often enough to
keep one interested. And a great cast and some nice miniature effects
don't hurt none neither of course. The main complaint though is that
Stephanie Beacham's character is never fully developed.
