Mark (Andrew C. Fisher) has fulfilled himself a lifelong dream, to buy
a old western ghosttown, Blackwood, to turn it into a holiday resort. And
he's so enthusiastic about it that he doesn't even see the writings on the
wall: The place is a dump without running water or electricity, and the
next town three hours away, his wife Jenna (Mandy Lee Rubio) hates it here
with a passion, his lone investor (Mike Dell) bails upon seeing Blackwood,
and at night the town's actually really spooky. And Blackwood has every
right to be spooky after Mark learns of the town's violent history from
groundskeeper Billy (Keekee Suki). Nevertheless, Mark hires his cousin
Justin (Alil Alkhafaji) to shoot a documentary/commercial about the place,
but before long Justin's girlfriend Lisa (Lauren Lox) urges him to leave.
But then Lisa disappears, and when confronted with it, Mark reacts mighty
weird - frighteningly weird even ... I won't lie, I'm not the
biggest fan of the found footage genre - but this movie somehow gets it
right, basically because it does its best to not look like a found footage
movie (or sound like one, there's an actual musical score here to
accompany the action, a rarity within the genre), doing its best to create
some well-framed shots and visually getting the most out of its authentic
ghost town location. And of course putting an emphasis on mystery and
suspense doesn't hurt either, nor does a solid small ensemble cast playing
some well fleshed out characters, making this into one quite cool piece of
horror cinema.
