Five years ago, Jon Matthews (Dan Fox) was the middle weight champion
of his league, but since then, lots of water has passed under the bridge:
He got married to Miranda (Natalie Kulesza) and had a daughter (Rebecca
Leonard) - but while he has been a champ in the ring, he is doing less
well in real life, and now he and his family are threatened with eviction
from their apartment. Jon decides to do the only thing he knows how to do
- he gets back into the ring to fight, but now in a much smaller league
and for peanuts as prizemoney, and much to the dismay of his wife, his
daughter and even his doctor (Robert Nolan). In the ring, he fights for
his life - and loses. But when he sees his wife and daughter standing by
him even after the fight, he figures he has actually won, he has a life
worth living ... While in writing, this short seems to be a bit
on the clichéed side, this is not true for the film itself, as most of
its 10 minutes of running time actually take place in the ring, and the
ringside action is brutal - but brought to the screen in an extremely
effective way that it serves not only as the film's action outlet but
actually seems to be the very engine that tells the story. Pretty
exciting, actually!
