The old West: As a kid, Charlie (Stephen Parker) was helping his father
(Jim McCullough sr) working in his own private (but hopeless) goldmine.
Then a meteor hit, which killed daddy, & left Charlie ... well,
changed.
7 years later: Charlie is now fully grown (& played by Gil
Perkins), still living with his mother Ruth ... & he is a monster who
every now & again kills people, because in his mind he still is a kid
with way too much strength. His mother, still loving her son (& he
loves her back) tries everything to hush up his involvement in the
murders, & indeed his existence, as only she knows about him. But this
little secret is aslo in the way of her relationship to the town's sheriff
Bob (Stuart Wade). Then though Ruth really finds gold in her husband's
mine, & quite much of it, too, & suddenly she's a rich woman &
can afford to move to a big house at the dge of town, with Charlie getting
his own room, & the sheriff regularly coming for social calls ... much
to the dismay of Charlie, who suddenly realizes he is relegated to playing
second fiddle in his mother's life. Naturally, he goes onto another
rampage, & he kidnaps a young girl, Kathy (Gloria Castillo) &
takes her home with him, but doesn't kill her. Mama, when she finds
Kathy, is terrified, & to hush her up she gives her 500 Dollars, &
offers her employ as her & Charlie's companion, for an additional 500
Dollars each month. After the shock of having been abducted by a monster
wears off, Kathy gladly accepts. However, that same night, when Kathy
meets with ehr no-good-boyfriend Mark (Chuck Courtney), he steals all her
money ... which brings Kathy to an idea: to use Charlie to get her
revenge. Soon, Mark is dead, but then, seeing the sheriff kiss his
mother, Charlie attacks & amlmost kills him too. Mother realizes
that it must have been Kathy who let Charlie out & made him kill Mark,
but when she confronts the girl, she not only admits to it but also makes
it clear that she has Ruth in her hand, & soon bribes her to write up
a will in her favour. Then though she tries to persuade Charlie to kill
his own mother, because she neglects him for the sheriff, & she almost
has him convinced, until he overhears his mother refusing to the sheriff's
advances in his favour ... Furiously, Charlie drags Kathy, who he now
knows has lied to him, to the nearest cliffs & throws her off, but the
sheriff & his deputy (Norman Leavitt) are close behind & shoot him
down as well, with Ruth watching in horror. Teen-flick, monster
story & Western all rolled into one, peppered with a oedipal twist
& told in typical 1950's drive-in style, underbudgeted, naturally. In
other words, not a good film, but wonderful to watch. Jack Peirce's
monster make-up is a disappointment though, monster Charlie looks more
like a bearded man with bad teeth & a scar across his face. Not
handsome to be sure, but not in the least bit scary.
