Mr Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Joe Termolen (Stewart Moss) beam down to a
planet that's about to implode to evacuate a science facility ... to find
the life supporting system of the facility turned off and all those in the
science station seem to have gone crazy before dying.
Back on the Enterprise, Termolen first turns crazy himself, and
eventually he dies. Soon, others turn crazy as well, including Captain
Kirk (William Shatner), Mr Spock, nurse Chapel (Majel Barrett) and the
navigators Riley (Bruce Hyde) and Sulu (George Takei) ... at the worst
possible time though since the ship is in orbit around a planet about to
implode, and every unexpected reaction of the planet could mean doom. It
gets worse when Riley, just like that, turns the engines off ... and the
engines would take half an hour to heat up again and be fit for warpspeed
- while the planet is about to implode in 20 minutes. Now not even Scotty
(James Doohan) can help - but then Kirk, who has turned normal again, has
an idea. whioch has something to do with the implosion, matter and
antimatter - and it works, but not only that, from now on the Enterprise
is able to timetravel (which it would do occasionally in future episodes)
...
Of course the script of this episode is rather silly, especially
because it fails to make the connection between the imploding planet and
the virus that makes everybody going mad - but then again, it gives each
Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner and George Takei an opportunity to royally
ham it up - and especially Takei as topless swashbuckler complete with
fencing sword is great fun.
