The starship Enterprise is threatened by a cubical object that blocks
her way. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) orders it to be shot out of the
sky ... which only makes matters worse when a short time later, the
Enterprise is threatened by a giant spaceship, which announces her
imminent destruction. Kirk decides to bluff and invents an all-powerful
Corbomite screen out of the blue which, he claims, will automatically
retaliate against the attacker. The alien aboard the other ship buys it
and invites Kirk plus company over ...
A subplot concerns a new navigator, Bailey (Anthony Call), a young
hothead who frequently loses his nerve but has become Kirk's favourite
because he reminds him of himself, ten years ago. So, when the alien
invites Kirk over, he takes Bailey with him ... and the two have to learn
the alien is not the evil monster it seems to be but a young boy (Clint
Howard) who is all-powerful on one hand, but eager to learn from other
cultures on the other ... and he asks Kirk to leave a companion with him,
for cultural exchange. And wouldn't you know it, Bailey volunteers ...
So-so episode with some of the plottwists announcing themselves way too
soon ... but seeing the Enterprise threatened by a cubical object ...
that's at least worth a chuckle.
