On their way home from a football game (they lost), the bus of five
highschool students (Rebecca Budic, Kenn Scott, Zack Ward, Sean P.Donahue,
Wendy Schumacher) and their principal (Stella Stevens) breaks down in a
very bad neighbourhood. Fortunately, our heroes find abode with nice blind
Mr Riecher (Roddy McDowall), a caretaker who lives in quite a fancy
apartment at the back of a warehouse ... or maybe that wasn't so
fortunate, because Riecher is one part of an intergalactic hunter couple,
he's the bait, while the so-called Star Hunter is
responsible for killing the prey, a selectionof the predominant species on
whatever planet. Soon enough, our sextet find themselves on the run from
the Star Hunter, who is keeping them in a radius of only a few blocks via
a forcefield. The principal of course promises to get them out of here,
but is shot dead at the first chance, and now her students have to relie
on their own skills ... oh, and the knowledge of the Tracker (Fred
Olen Ray), an alien entity who's to track down the hunters, who are of
course intergalactically wanted criminals. The Tracker though has chosen
dopehead Cooper (Zack Ward) as his host body, which is a bit of a
problem because every time he makes a suggestion the others are not quite
sure if he's not just caught up in some marihuana induced fantasy. Anyways,
the Star Hunter is tough to kill, and eventually, everyone's killed except
for good American boy and girl (Kenn Scott, Rebecca Budig), who are
ultimately saved by a presumed dead but reanimated Cooper, who shows them
the Star Hunter's energy source, and once they destroy it, the baddie is
destroyed, and Cooper's soul is elevated to the next level (in an
intergalactic rather than a spiritual way it seems) while our two
survivors are free to fall in love with each other. Obviously
taking more than a few hints from Predator, Star Hunter is
actually a pretty entertaining if not in the least memorable low budget
sci-fi action flick. Action, special effects and costumes all might be
less than great, and most of the teens involved are your typical cannon
fodder - but then again, it's well paced, doesn't take itself too
seriously, and isn't too silly compared to some of its competitors.
