It really seems to be nothing big, innocent student Jane (Revell
Carpenter) has developed feelings for fellow student Allen (Kumasi
Hopkins), who's tutoring her in algebra - so when he invites her to a
party, she's more than willing to interpret that as something more than it
is, and when she finds out he really only sees himself as her friend, that
leaves her pretty much devastated. The real problem though is that Jane
has captured the fancy of Allen's sleazy friend Will (Nicholas Goodwin),
who sees what's going on much clearer than either Allen or Jane, and thus
he manages to "stumble in" on Jane when she's at her worst at
that party, console her with sweet words and sweeter drinks - and
ultimately take full advantage of her ... A rather touching
college drama that unfolds its full potential not by the story it tells
but by how it tells it, intentionally leaving out key parts of the
narrative to concentrate on their (emotionally more loaded) aftermaths,
leaving quite a bit to the audience's imagination, but not in a way that
the viewer is lost in the process. This works thanks to a very thought
through directorial effort that's really aware of what to show and what
not, and strong performances by all involved. Definitely worth a watch!
