Now to be super-honest, without having read the novel A Distance from Avalon: When the Dying and the Dead
Reunite - which is apparently out there as a stage- and screenplay as
well -, this monologue will make little sense to you. So for the
backstory, Jean La Croix Distance is somebody who sees himself above
humankind, possibly a vampire, but also someone who hides his
vulnerability behind big words and whose biggest shortcoming might be his
lack of humility - without him ever being ready to admit as much of
course. And this 3 minute monologue sums up the character rather nicely -
if you know the context that is, otherwise he just comes off as a
show-off. Now that all said, Seduction of Distance is
not actually a full-fledged movie, it's lacking in the technical
department (including recurring wind noises on the soundtrack) and was
quite possibly filmed on a cellphone by Mike Messier, who also plays the
lead and only role, himself. But at the same time, it's a pretty great
showcase for Messier, the actor, who really gives his character the
necessary emotional depth to come across as more than just your standard
overblown villain, and he most certainly also knows how to write
impressive monologues.
