Somewhere in rural UK, in a mansion the locals daren't come near on a
full moon, a film crew makes an old school gothic horror movie with
has-been Oliver (James Fleet) in the lead - and Oliver isn't the easiest
guy to deal as he has a certain predilection for alcohol and always knows
where to get some. What our film team doesn't know is that, on the last
day of their shoot, there's a full moon and thus a werewolf roaming the
premises, and every time one strays from the flock they turn into wolf
treats. But with a film crew as chaotic as this one, it takes a while for
anyone to notice someone's gone, and when they finally get organized to
fight back they're already down to gloriously drunk Oliver, light guy
Steve (Jay Taylor), inefficient director Derek (Rupert Procter), cowardly
producer Peter (Stephen Mapes), and feisty assistant director Fiona
(Thaila Zucchi). But even as an organized crew, they're a hot mess at
best, and the werewolf is ruthless and pretty invulnerable ...
Now this movie works just fine as a horror movie, and director
Dominic Brunt sure enough has the genre down - but it works just so much
better as behind-the-scenes comedy, as the film's focus is not so much on
the horror aspects themselves but on the characters and their ofen
hilarious dynamics, with some genre parody thrown in just for good
measure. And a nice ensemble playing it straight while clearly in on the
joke of course helps bringing this movie to life rather beautifully,
making this fun entertainment, no matter whether you like horror or not -
though that said, you better not mind a severed limb or three.
