"Immersed" journalists Jake (Joe Swanberg) and Sam (AJ Bowen)
accompany Patrick (Kentucker Audley) to the South American jungle to
reunite with his sister Caroline (Amy Seimetz) who has joined a
self-supplying "sober living" commune to fight her various
addictions. Now Jake and Sam are a little put off by the armed guards at
the commune's gate, but the commune itself, Eden Parish, does fascinate
them, regarding the selflessness and idealism of its members, the
self-sufficient lifestyle and the like. And "Father" (Gene
Jones), the commune leader, does have a charm about him and a way with
words to make them overlook certain details that might taint the place's
harmonious feel. Patrick is especially fascinated by Eden Parish, not only
because he sees his sister happier than in a long time, but also becaus
she has organized a threeway for him and two of the commune beauties ... Things
turn sour the next day when Jake and Sam want to leave (Patrick has chosen
to stay) and many of the commune members want to go with them - but are
prevented from doing so by the armed guards. Jake is sent ahead to the
helicopter that's supposed to take them away ... but finds himself shot
at, while Sam anmd Patrick are taken captives ... and Father prepares
special "cocktails" for his commune to join him on his trip to
the next world ... Obviously inspired by the infamous Jonestown
Massacre from 1978, this film, while taking the pseudo-documentary road of
found-footage cinema, does not try to go the dry and factual way but is
based on a narrative arc that introduces the audience to the commune with
very innocent eyes at first and builds up suspense very gradually until
the horror unfolds - and that's what makes the film great, really, as
while the events unfolding might not come as total surprises, the way the
whole thing is told is different and refreshing. And despite this being a
first-person P.O.V. narrative with handheld cameras, it's rather
beautifully filmed, with a welcome focus on asmosphere and the like. Truth
to be told, there might be a couple of narrative flaws near the ending,
but in all a pretty exciting movie!
