Pamela's (Peggy Dankers) mother has died only recently, so her best
friends Coen (Dion Daams) and Bart (Sven Link) decide to stop over to
cheer her up - and once over Coen gets more than a little interesting in a
musical box Pamela's mum has left her - and despite Pamela's pleas not to,
he winds it up behind her back ... and gives Sam the fright of his life.
Because what Coen doesn't know, and also none of the others, the music box
is possessed by the demon Rombkekomber who will kill all those listening
to its music. And suddenly, the three friends are on the demon's kill-list
...
Now one thing up front, De Rombkekomber was made on a
very modest budget, so don't expect it to be a technical marvel. But that
said, it's clearly done by people who just love the horror genre, and that
really shines through from beginning to end: So while the story might
employ many horror tropes, it still manages to create a very original and
creepy mythology of its own within horror confines, plus it's carried by a
genre-savvy direction that keeps things light enough without making the
thing just silly. And the actors clearly seem to be having a good time,
which only adds to the film's instant likeability.
