Hex-Man D-Lord is a minor celebrity in the local poetry slam scene, and
he thinks he's good enough to participate and even win the prestigious Ultra
States Poetry Slam - if only he can beat rather intimidating fellow
poet The Groove (Joe Maurer). Then out of the blue, Julius (Glenn
Berggoetz) shows up at Hex-Man's house, and tells him he's utter shit! But
he's a poetry slam guru, so he can help Hex-Man make it to the top, to not
create poetry with his mind or heart but with his gut - but despite all of
Julius' best efforts, it seems Hex-Man is just too caught up in his own
mindset to change his way of thinking - and creating of course. Then one
day, Hex-Man meets his number one fan, Chelsea (Kary Gall), and the two
fall in love immediately - and Hex-Man's poetry suffers gravely, as
instead of writing about his inner turmoil, he writes about unicorns and
rainbows, and all in a not very creative way. And when he has an informal
poetry stand-off with The Groove, The Groove laughs him off the premises.
So is all lost, or is there a slim chance that Chelsea, the love of
Hex-Man's life, will dump him soon? ... Basically, this is a
charming little comedy that will sure hit a nerve with all those who feel
a bit weirded out by the more eccentric participants of poetry slams,
while at the same time it's un-offensive enough to maybe strike a chord
with poetry slam afficionados with an actual sense of humour. What really
makes this movie though is its witty writing that allows for many an
unexpected plottwist and many a hilarious situation. And of course, a very
solid cast doesn't hurt one bit either to make this a rather enjoyable
little movie.
