It should have been a rather simple murder case for private detective
Espada (Vítor Correira) - an architect and a filmmaker shooting a
documentary about him are killed -, but this is a small village in the
country where everyone has one's hand in evertything, and too much is held
together by an unhealthy combination of nepotism and intrigue, blackmail
and extortion - so the closer he gets to the truth, the more he gets into
a maelstrom threatening to suck him into a hole with no return. And being
threatened and charmed by different players of the scenario, Espada
eventually finds himself on the side of the blackmailers - with dire
consequences ... Ornamento e Crime is a very
unapologetic loveletter to film noir cinema, with a plot closely related
to The Big Sleep, characters who
are clichés rather than rounded out figures (and intentionally so) and
rather beautiful retro black and white cinematography - and one has to
admit, as pure hommage the film is great, it looks great, transmits just
the right feel, the actors look (and act) their parts, perfect. One has to
admit though, the film falls a bit short when it comes to actual
storytelling: There are a few too many plotholes, too many narrative
threads are just abandoned along the way, and if The
Big Sleep is a bit confusing, Ornamento e Crime is utterly
so - which really is a bit of a shame, as the movie looks just
great, but the storytelling just doesn't live up to everything that's
awesome about the movie.
