Lorem (voiced by Amanda Jane Smith) is an incredibly powerful Shard
Adept - meaning she has some incredible extrasensory powers she can
use even as a weapon - and she is the one who has found out how to channel
her powers and rise to the top of her planet, using the current regent as
her puppet. However, she wants to take the whole thing even further and
melt her powers with a resonator called the Automa. While Lorem
uses her Shard powers to her own advantage, Shard sensitives on her planet
are usually hunted and killed by the Metacox guards as they are considered
dangerous. The story then follows two novice Metadox guards, Sephadec
(John Fleming) and Ashendel (Morgan Muscat). Sephadec eventually finds out
he is Shard sensitive and flees the Metadox compound, and Ashendel, who's
young and naive and believes in everything Metadox says, betrays him
rather accidently. Only when the two meet again does Ashendel realize what
he has done - and then he notices Shard powers inside himself ... Ashendel
flees the Metadox compound and eventually bumps into Shard sensitive
Merelle (Katie Uhlman), whose mother and sister have been killed by the
Metadox guards. She helps Ashendel to find and accept himself, and
together they train for the ultimate showdown with Lorem and Metadox as
such, a showdown that will leave no stone unturned ... Ok, in
writing, Origin: A Call to Minds might not make 100% sense and
might sound overly esoteric (which the movie actually is) - but on film,
it works amazingly fine, as writer/director/designer/animator David
T.Krupicz manages to actually drag his audience into his world that
follows a slighly different set of laws of nature, laws of nature he
fortunately leaves largely unexplained. Instead he brings his world to
life by powerful storytelling, strong characters, and on top of that
beautiful otherworldly designs, all of which makes this movie an almost
immersive adventure. Recommended!
