It's board game night, so our heroes are at their nerdiest from the
get-go - but they happen to be seven and somebody rolls 6-6-6 ... and
suddenly the voice of a movie announcer (Daniel Pierce) tells them they
are actually characters in a horror movie, and the one least suspicious
will turn out to be the killer ... and suddenly Kyle (Nils Jansson) starts
to act suspicious and seems to have developed the talents of teleporting,
seeing in the future and the like - though that might be just because he's
the biggest nerd of them all, not because he's the mastermind of this.
Still, the others think him to be the villain and try to find out their
roles in the movie plot ... There's of course the hot white chick Amy
(Liz Fenning), who has to be the heroine, her boyfriend (actually ex, but
for the sake of the story he ditches that part of their relationship
status) Tom (Brendan McGowan), the chubby best friend Tanya (Shanna
Malcolm) who's bound to die early because the chubby girls always do, the
two black dudes AJ (Ajala Bandele) and Chris (Chris Hampton), who are left
discussing who's the black guy who always dies first and who's the LL Cool
J character who will survive ... and then there's Asian lesbian Jesse
(Sharon Mae Wang), whose role in a formula movie nobody can quite figure.
But anyways, everybody's hope for this being a straight forward story are
quite shattered when the hot white chick dies first, and as the body count
rises the behaviour of our heroes gets more and more bizarre, culminating
with the Asian lesbian letting herself being fucked (and disliking it) by
the stud Tom just to become the hot lead chick and thus survive, others
going into transgender territory and the like - and the slasher formula is
of course further shattered when those killed come back to life as
zombies. So, to put it simply, what the fuck is going on here? OMG...
We're in a Horror Movie is a postmodern, formula-coinscious slasher
very much in the vein of Scream (a film that's very
self-consciously quoted by title in this one even) - but then it's not
really derivative of that movie, as OMG... We're in a Horror Movie
is much more playing up the comedic aspects of the premise than the
earlier movie and tries much less to show how genre conscious it is to the
audience - instead the film just tries to have fun with its source
material, and succeeds too (and in a way less moronic way than Scary
Movie and the like), thanks to screenplay and direction not going
after any cheap joke, instead finding some really fun deviations from the
well-trodden path (seriously, do expect Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde quotes
in this one), plus the cast seem to be really into this as they play the
clichés they are supposed to be to the t. Genre fans are sure to find
this a laugh-out-loud movie ... but I'm almost sure that people with only
a vague knowledge of horror might be fond of that one!
