Allison (Marie Barker) has only recently moved into a place that once
belonged to her granduncle Drake (Andrew Puckett) - and suddenly she finds
an undead woman in her bathroom. Now fortunately a young scout (Josie
Levy) provides her with the contact of paranormal investigators, but while
Jake (D. Dylan Schettina), seems to be the real deal but is also an
impractical nerd, Desmond (Greg Garrison) is more of a slacker who's in it
for the chicks. Now soon the two and Allison find out that the whole
neighbourhood is infested by the undead, but while Jake's the one who
really knows how to combat them, he's soon killed, and while Desmond tries
his best to fight the undead, he has little idea what to do ... but
fortunately, Allison finds the diary of her granduncle Drake - who
unfortunately belonged to a group of Satanists trying to evoke Za'thax, a
demon from the beginning of time out to destroy the world. And while Drake
has died 100 years ago, he has chosen today to return (as a grinning
zombie [Nathan DeRussy]) with his army of undead to prepare the coming of
Za'thax. Fortunately though, Allison and Desmond find a way to turn some
of the undead onto their side, including Jake, but unfortunately, Drake's
supply of zombies seems limitless, and especially after Jake is reduced to
his severed (yet still talking) head, out heroes run out of viable options
... The word "neon" in the title might already
suggest it, The Neon Dead is a rather loving throwback to 1980s
horror movies, expecially of the direct-to-video variety, with its
slightly silly and over-the-top story, its humouous approach to things,
bits and pieces of gruesomeness, special effects of mostly the practical
variety (including good old-fashioned stop motion animation), and a
conviction at heart that horror flicks just ought to be fun ... and it
works out, also thanks to a nicely paced script, a fluent directorial
effort, and a cast in on the joke, but competent enough to pull off
their characters anyhow. Plus, the makers' love for horror is just
undeniable!
