A man (Dennis Kleinsmith) is deeply in love with Morella (Lisa
Coronado) - in the beginning, but once they're married, Morella grows
increasingly weird, and though he still feels drawn to her, he also starts
to fear her - so when she on her death bed mutters "I will never
leave you", it's more a curse than anything else ... and she remains
true to her word, because dying, she bears the man a daughter (played by
Hannah Morwell as a child, by Lisa Coronado as an adult) who becomes the
splitting image of her mother, and also shares her strange habits ... Morella
is an Edgar Allan Poe adaptation that feels enjoyably out of its time:
This one is not about flashy camerawork, special effects overkill,
modernization or post-modern reinterpretation. Instead it relies heavily
on atmosphere, on its competent cast, and actually on the story itself -
which is recited to accompany the movie (there is hardly any on-screen
dialogue), and despite everything set to pictures, the film still leaves
enough room for one's own interpretation of the story - which is quite a
rewarding concept. Pretty good, in all.
